"It sounded like a bomb went off and the whole building shook," Store Manager Chris Dapolito said. "Thank God no one was in that area of the store at the time."
No one was injured during the crash that took place around 4:30 p.m. Thursday when an elderly New Rochelle driver backed into the food market located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Second Street.
Right after the crash, store employees, customers and people in the area ran to help the 83-year-old driver, Dapolito added.
Pelham Fire Chief Jim Dinapoli said that luckily, the building's structural stability was not damaged and that no one was on the sidewalk at the time.
"It's really amazing that no one was injured, thankfully,' Dinapoli said.
Employees and maintenance crews worked all night to clean up and restock the store, as well as make sure nothing was stolen.
"They are here replacing the glass front right now, Dapolito said. "By the end of the day, we should be back to normal."
